A dehumidifier should go where humidity is highest – and in most homes, that’s downstairs or in the basement. But the right answer depends on what you’re trying to fix, how your house is built, and whether one unit can realistically do the job across multiple floors.

Why Downstairs Is Usually the Starting Point
Moisture in a home tends to originate at the lower levels and rise. Basements and ground floors sit closest to the soil, which holds moisture year-round. Concrete foundations are porous – water vapour passes through them continuously, even without visible leaks. Ground-floor rooms also tend to be cooler than upper floors, which means relative humidity is naturally higher even before any moisture enters through the structure.
Warm, moist air rises. Whatever moisture is generated or absorbed at the lower levels moves upward through stairwells, gaps around pipes and cables, and open doorways. A basement sitting at 70% RH will gradually raise ground floor humidity, and from there into the floors above.
This is why controlling moisture at the lower level is the higher-leverage placement in most homes – you’re intercepting the source rather than chasing the symptom upstairs.
When Upstairs Placement Makes More Sense
Downstairs placement is not always the answer. Place the unit upstairs if any of these apply:
The lower floors are already dry. If you’ve measured RH in the basement and ground floor and both are reading below 55%, the humidity problem is originating upstairs. Cooking, showering, and overnight breathing in sealed bedrooms are all significant moisture sources that don’t depend on the lower levels at all.
The bedroom humidity problem is occupant-driven. An adult exhales roughly 300–400ml of water vapour overnight. In a small, sealed bedroom with poor ventilation, this alone can push RH from 50% at bedtime to 70% by morning. A dehumidifier in the basement cannot reach this moisture – it’s contained in a closed upstairs room. If bedrooms feel damp at night and ground floor conditions are fine, a targeted upstairs unit is more effective.
The basement door is always closed. A well-sealed basement with a closed door is effectively a separate air volume. A dehumidifier controlling that space will improve basement conditions but the effect on upper floors will be minimal. In this configuration, you need a unit on each level if both have humidity problems.
Condensation is forming on upstairs windows. Window condensation is caused by warm moist air hitting a cold glass surface. If it’s only happening upstairs, the moisture source is upstairs. A basement unit won’t fix it.
How Humidity Actually Moves Between Floors
Humidity does not distribute evenly through a house the way temperature does. A few factors control how much a lower-level dehumidifier helps upstairs:
Stairwell configuration. An open stairwell with no door between basement and ground floor creates one continuous air volume. Dry air produced by a basement dehumidifier rises naturally and reduces humidity on the floors above. A closed door between floors limits this transfer significantly.
Temperature difference. The greater the temperature difference between floors, the more air movement occurs as warm air rises and cool air falls. In winter, when basements are much cooler than living spaces, this stack effect is stronger and a basement unit has more influence on upper floors.
Floor area and layout. In a small house (under 1,000 sq ft per floor), one well-placed unit can influence the whole building. In a larger or more compartmentalised house, humidity stays local to each zone.
In practice, a basement dehumidifier in a home with an open stairwell typically reduces ground floor RH by 5–10 percentage points and upper floor RH by 3–7 points over 24–48 hours – assuming the basement is the primary moisture source. If you want to know whether the basement unit is actually reaching the upper floors, measure with a hygrometer on each level before and after 48 hours of continuous running.
Single Unit vs Two Units
One unit is enough when:
- The house is small (under 1,200 sq ft total) with an open layout
- Humidity problems are concentrated on one level
- The stairwell is open and air moves freely between floors
- The basement is clearly the primary moisture source and upper floors are only mildly elevated (55–60% RH)
Place the single unit in the most humid area, set it to 50% RH, and run it continuously until the baseline drops. Then switch to auto-cycling.
Two units are needed when:
- Upper floors consistently read above 60% RH even after the lower level is controlled
- The house has a closed basement door and separate HVAC zones
- Bedrooms feel humid overnight despite dry daytime conditions – this is occupant moisture that a distant unit can’t address
- Total floor area exceeds 1,500 sq ft across multiple levels
The most efficient two-unit setup is one in the basement or lowest level (controlling the structural moisture source) and one on the upper floor nearest to the bedrooms (controlling overnight occupant moisture). This targets both sources independently rather than trying to move dry air across temperature and pressure gradients.
Making the Decision: A Simple Diagnostic
Before buying a second unit or repositioning an existing one, measure first.
- Place a hygrometer in the basement, one on the ground floor, and one upstairs. Leave them for 24 hours without running any dehumidifier.
- Check readings at the same time each morning – morning readings capture overnight accumulation, which is the peak humidity period.
- The floor with the highest consistent reading is where the primary moisture source is.
If basement RH is 70%+ and upper floors are 55–65%, a single basement unit will likely bring the whole house under control. If all floors read similarly high, or upper floors read higher than lower ones, the moisture is primarily upstairs and that’s where to start.
Placement Within Each Floor
Once you’ve decided which floor to prioritise, placement within that space matters. A central position with at least 30cm clearance on all sides gives the unit access to the full air volume. Avoid corners, behind storage, or against walls – all of these restrict airflow and reduce how much of the room the unit can reach.
