The best position for a dehumidifier in a basement is a central, open area with at least 30 cm of clearance on all sides. This gives the unit access to the full air volume of the space and prevents moisture from pooling in corners.
Why Basement Placement Matters More Than in Other Rooms
Basements present a harder dehumidification problem than bedrooms or living spaces. Moisture enters continuously through concrete walls and floors, soil moisture migrates inward during wet weather, and airflow is limited by the enclosed structure. A dehumidifier placed poorly in a basement can run constantly and still leave damp zones it never reaches.
Getting the position right from the start means the unit works with the room rather than against it.
The Best Position: Central and Open
Place the dehumidifier as close to the centre of the basement as the layout allows. This gives it equal access to air on all sides and prevents moisture from settling in far corners while the unit works only the area around it.
If your basement has a finished layout with walls or partitions, treat each section as its own zone. A single central unit in an open basement works well. A divided basement may need the unit repositioned between zones, or a second unit entirely.
Clearance rules:

The unit still needs airflow clearance, so “near the moisture source” does not mean pushed against the wall. Position it 1–2 metres away from the problem area, facing it, with clear space behind and to the sides.

Use Continuous Drainage – Basements Make It Easy
Most basements have a floor drain, and a dehumidifier running in a basement should use it. Connect the unit’s drain hose to the floor drain and the unit runs indefinitely without needing the tank emptied.
This matters more in basements than anywhere else in the house. A basement dehumidifier during initial drying can fill a standard tank in a few hours. Emptying it manually overnight means the unit sits idle for hours at the most critical phase of drying.
If there is no floor drain, check whether the unit supports a condensate pump (some do), which pushes water upward to a sink or laundry drain. Alternatively, run a long hose to the nearest drain point.
Single Unit vs Multiple Units
For basements up to around 1,500 sq ft with a relatively open layout, one correctly sized unit placed centrally handles the job. For larger or divided basements, a single unit will create uneven results – the area near the unit drops to target humidity while far corners remain damp.

Common Placement Mistakes
Pushing it into a corner. Corners have the worst airflow in any room. The unit pulls from the same small air volume repeatedly rather than drawing from the whole space.
Placing it behind storage. Basement storage boxes, shelving, and furniture block intake and exhaust. Even partial obstruction cuts efficiency significantly.
Moving it too often. A dehumidifier needs 24–48 hours in a position to have a measurable effect. Moving it every few hours because results seem slow prevents you from getting accurate data on whether placement is working.
Ignoring the drainage option. Running a basement dehumidifier on tank mode means it will stop working during the night or whenever the tank fills. This is the most common reason people report their dehumidifier “not working” in a basement.
